CHICAGO — A community is calling for action after a young girl was sexually assaulted while walking to school on the city’s South Side last week.

According to police, the incident occurred around 7:50 a.m. in the 1300 block of West 91st Street in Brainerd, as the victim was making her way to school at Fort Dearborn Elementary.

Officers said the victim, a female minor, was walking in the area when an unknown juvenile male approached her and began asking her questions.

Officers said the juvenile male then forced the victim into a nearby alley, where he proceeded to sexually assault her.

Following the incident, Chicago police offered a warning to residents, but the search for the individual responsible continues.

According to police, the offender was described as an African American male who is believed to be around 13 or 14 years of age.

Officers said the offender, who had black hair with orange tips and brown eyes, stood around 5-foot-3 or 5-foot-4. He was last spotted wearing a black jacket, a black long-sleeve shirt with white writing, gray sweatpants and a clear school bookbag.

On Tuesday morning, as the search for the individual responsible continues, the organization Violence Interrupters handed out flyers to parents and their children offering safety tips for those who walk to and from school.

“We have to work harder now to make sure we protect these kids out here each and every day. It makes no sense; it’s unacceptable. Which we know the young girl is 13 years old; now she has to deal with the trauma for the rest of her life and it’s just totally unacceptable,” Tio Hardiman, Executive Director for Violence Interrupters, said during a press conference.
