“When I’m packing my lunch for school, I’ll say, like, ‘I love you, goodbye. I’ll see you later.’ But yeah, that was what I said to him, and then I headed out the door,” she said.
Union leaders say the stabbing happened as Mobley assisted a coworker. They said a rider was spraying mace at a customer service assistant over a fare dispute. Mobley then stepped in and got stabbed.
“I don’t want any more people to die because the workers are supporting our city. They’re keeping the stations clean,” Yara said.
CTA riders are being urged to remain vigilant. On Friday, the Violence Interrupters handed out cards with safety tips.
“Anytime I spend my money to board the trains, I shouldn’t have to fear for my life,” said Tio Hardiman of the Violence Interrupters.
Hardiman called for more security across the rail system.
“We need all hands on deck. This is not about politics. It’s not about pointing fingers. This is a life that could have been saved,” Hardiman said.
Mobley was 41 years old. He joined the CTA in 2018.
“You have a father that’s now gone, that’s got children, a whole family. I think about that,” coworker Peter Henderson said.
Yara said her father loved the city and enjoyed his work for the CTA. She says her family will lean on each other as they mourn.
“I really want to remember him for how much time he spent with our family because he was very devoted, even if he would work long hours,” Yara said.
Mayor Brandon Johnson issued the following statement Friday:
“Today, my heart is with the family of Julian Mobley, a CTA employee who was senselessly murdered while selflessly stepping in to protect a fellow colleague. We are working with the Chicago Police Department and CTA to ensure the perpetrator is brought to justice for this abhorrent act of violence. My administration remains committed to doing everything in our power to ensure safety on the CTA for its commuters and its committed employees who make public transit possible. Julian embodied the best of Chicago. His courage, compassion, and willingness to stand up for others in a moment of need reflect the strength and humanity that define our city. Behind every tragedy is a family whose world has been changed forever. Our thoughts and prayers are with Julian’s wife and two children as they navigate this profound loss. They are not alone. Their city stands with them during this difficult time.”
The CTA issued the following statement Thursday:
“The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) is deeply saddened by the death of a beloved CTA employee at the Damen Green Line station today. We extend our heartfelt condolences to our colleague’s family, loved ones and coworkers.
“We are committed to supporting our employees and are always working with our public safety partners to strengthen protections for those who serve our riders every day.
“CTA is working closely with the Chicago Police Department (CPD) to support its investigation, including sharing available surveillance footage and other relevant information. We will support law enforcement officials’ efforts to ensure that the offender is apprehended and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
